Vaping Ingredients Explained!

From an outside perspective vaping seems just as harmful as cigarettes right? Wrong!

Although the human body is only meant to inhale oxygen and nothing else, Vaping is one of the least harmful nicotine consumption methods.

Turning your bottle of E-Liquid over you will come across a very small ingredient list. The ingredients on this list will consist of Vegetable Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Flavour, Nicotine. You may also notice a “May Contain” section that will normally state “traces of nuts”.

All of these ingredients are food grade inhalable, not to be confused with food grade consumable. This means these ingredients are safe for human inhalation, please do not drink vape juice.

Vegetable Glycerin is the main ingredient in vape juice, usually having a larger ratio compared to the other ingredients. Vegetable Glycerin is thick, clear and odorless liquid and is also water soluble. The most common place Vegetable Glycerin comes from is Processed Soy Beans or Palm Trees. On its own Vegetable Glycerin has a mild sweet flavour. Vegetable Glycerin preserves moisture which is why a E-liquid with a higher VG ratio won't be as dry as an E-liquid with a lower VG ratio.

Propylene Glycol is the next ingredient in vape Juice, usually having a lower ratio than VG - salt nicotine juices will usually be a 50/50 or 40/60 blend-. Propylene Glycol or PG is also Odorless, and clear but is slightly thinner than VG and also having a slightly sweet flavour on its own. PG is the flavour carrier in your E-liquids, it allows for a stronger, more intense flavour.

Your next ingredient on the list is flavouring! The best part, these flavouring's are the food grade inhalable version of the classic flavours we already know and love. Branch out, try different flavours!

Then comes nicotine, the addictive ingredient in vape juice. Nicotine levels in E-liquids can range from Zero as high as 20mgs/ml. Nicotine found in E-liquids is naturally extracted. In E-liquids you will either have Freebase (sub-ohm) Nicotine or Salt Nicotine. Freebase Nicotine is the purest form of Nicotine with a higher PH Balance of about 7-8 and a very common choice among seasoned vapers or individuals looking to quit nicotine entirely, whereas Salt Nicotine is a complex compound manufactures create where an acid (most commonly Benzoic Acid) is added to your nicotine base allowing for a smoother hit at your higher MGs, Salt Nicotine also has a lower PH also contributing to how smooth the hit will be. Keep in mind Salt nicotine is widely known to be more addictive than Freebase nicotine as the addition of the acids allow the nicotine to enter your bloodstream nearly right away vs the delayed 2-5 minutes it takes for freebase nicotine to hit your system.

Compared to Vaping Cigarettes have 600+ ingredients that aren't so Food Grade Inhalable. Ingredients like Tar, Formaldehyde, ammonia and many more aren’t exactly…safe. They also pose a much higher risk to your health than vaping.

Vaping: Where to Start?

Vaping became the new craze in the early 2000s when manufacturers introduced E-cigarettes.

The first Nicotine Vaporizer was created in 2003 by a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik this invention marked the beginning of the modern vaping industry and was the starting point for the Vapes we know today.

Hon Lik was motivated to create a smoking alternative by his father who unfortunately passed from lung cancer.

The history behind Vapes is fascinating and can really educate users to know exactly what the science behind it is.

Modern day vaping is much different then 22 years ago, vaping started with small cigarette sized devices whereas today we have several sizes, types and even designs.

Today you have Disposable Vapes, Open Pod systems, Closed Pod systems and even Box Mods. Let's talk about them and what they are.

Disposable Vapes are small hand held devices usually made of hard thick plastic. These Vapes are designed to be used, sometimes charged and thrown out once they are out of E-Liquid. Disposable Vapes have taken the world by storm with a rise in popularity and convenience but they are not for everyone. Disposable Vapes will be found in a 20mg/ml Salt nicotine majority of the time although manufacturers are testing and releasing Freebase options now as well. Disposable Vapes can range anywhere from 500-50,000+ Puffs lasting the average user 1-4 weeks of usage varying on the puff count and how heavy of a user each individual is.

We also have seen a rise in open pod systems, these are your refillable devices that either require a pod or a coil change every 2-4 weeks. These devices are designed to allow the user to refill their own pods with their choice of E-liquid. Open pod systems are user friendly and fairly easy to work, minimal maintenance is a huge selling point on these.

Closed pod systems were a very popular choice in the early vaping days. These systems are your classic Stlth device and Pre filled pods, Vuse, or even Juul. Although most modern vape stores tend to stray away from these devices they are a great option for individuals looking to quit smoking as they are convenient, easy to maintain and have the closest hit and hand feel to a classic cigarette.

Box mods, the biggest and most intimidating vape. Box mods were a huge hit among seasoned vapers and used for vape competitions and vape tricks. Nowadays Box mods are not as popular but still a great option for someone who loves a huge cloud. With the bigger devices comes more maintenance and less convenience. Box mods need a Sub Ohm Tank to go with them, Sub Ohm tanks are recommended as salt nicotine should not be vaped at any wattage higher than 25 whereas most Box mods go up to as high as 220W+. Along with the tanks you have coils, and the dreaded tank cleaning, tanks come apart in usually 5 separate parts; top, bottom, coil, mouthpiece and glass which all should be cleaned during every coil change for best flavour and a long lasting tank.

Although vaping has changed over the years it does not have to be complicated. Several individuals have had success quitting smoking with vaping and going on to be Nicotine free entirely!
